Read on to discover some of the most commonly asked delivery driver interview questions and answers.

1. Do you have experience as a delivery driver?

While many companies value experience, it’s not always essential – though if you do, make sure to mention it in your interview. Highlight your positive attributes and demonstrate to the interviewer how you’re a good fit for the role and their company.

Find out what skills you need to be a delivery driver.

  • Start with your background (experience, skills, or education relevant to the role).
  • Highlight key strengths (skills that align with the job).
  • Mention why you’re interested in the role (connect your experience to the job opportunity).
  • If you have no experience as a delivery driver, don’t worry, simply focus on transferable skills like reliability, time management, and customer service.

Example answer:

“I’m a hardworking and dependable person with a strong work ethic and great time management skills. While I haven’t worked as a delivery driver before, I have experience in (mention any relevant job, like retail, warehouse, or customer service), where I learned to stay organised, work efficiently under pressure, and provide great customer service.”

2. Do you have a clean driving licence?

If you do – that’s a simple answer. If you don’t, it’s always best to be honest since your driving history will be checked if you’re hired.

We all know accidents can happen and many courier companies don’t expect a perfect record, they just want to feel assured you’re a responsible driver and to understand any past issues.

Example answer:

“I do have a minor blemish on my record from a few years ago when I was involved in a small accident, but it was determined I was not at fault. Since then, I’ve been very careful on the road, and I have a clean record now.”

3. Why do you want to work as a delivery driver?

Perhaps you love the idea of being out on the road, being in an active role or interacting with people. Keep your answers positive and focussed on what will make you a reliable delivery driver.

Example answer:

“I’m excited about this opportunity because I enjoy working independently, driving, meeting new people, and staying active.”

4. What customer experience do you have?

As a delivery driver, providing great customer service is an important part of the job. Highlight any experience you have with customer service, whether that’s from delivery work, other roles, or volunteering. Bonus points if you can give an example of a time you went above and beyond for a customer.

Example answer:

“I’ve gained a lot of experience from working at (restaurant/bar/shop etc.) where I (took orders/served customers etc.) I’m always polite, friendly and helpful and aim to provide the best customer service every time.”

5. How do you handle high-pressure situations, such as tight delivery schedules?

Strong time management and working independently are essential for delivering parcels on time. Describe the tools and practices you’d use to stay efficient and how you’d handle challenges along the way.

Example answer:

“I’m familiar with using navigation tools, which helps me to save a great deal of time when driving. If I see that a route I’m currently taking has an issue, I immediately change the route, and I don’t worry about getting lost. I also minimise downtime by preparing packages in order and following traffic updates to avoid delays.”

6. What would you do if a customer is upset about a late or missing package?

Dealing with late deliveries has become an inevitable challenge for delivery drivers. This question aims to assess your ability to handle difficult situations and provide good customer service. Late or missing deliveries can be frustrating for customers, so the interviewer wants to see that you can stay calm, professional, and helpful.

Example answer:

“I would stay calm, listen to their concerns, and apologise for the inconvenience. Then, I’d direct them to the appropriate customer support for further assistance.”

7. How do you handle a situation where you can’t deliver a package?

Sometimes, deliveries can’t be completed due to incorrect addresses, inaccessible locations, or customer unavailability. In your answer you can explain that you’d think on your feet, follow procedures and ensure the package is handled correctly.

Example answer:

“I would follow the guidelines, such as checking for alternative delivery options (like a neighbour or safe place, or notifying the customer or dispatch if needed. If I still can’t deliver the parcel I’d follow guidelines for returning it.”

8. How comfortable are you with lifting heavy packages and working in different weather conditions?

Good physical fitness is essential for being a delivery driver – you’ll be loading and unloading parcels and carrying heavy parcels up stairs. Here, you should highlight any experience of similar tasks, what you like to do to keep fit, understanding of safe lifting techniques and how you’d adapt to changing weather conditions.

Example answer:

“I’m comfortable lifting heavy items and like to keep fit by going to the gym. I understand that delivery work happens in all weather, and I’m prepared to adapt with appropriate clothing.”

9. Why should we hire you?

This is a great opportunity to highlight your strengths, work ethic, and why you’re a great fit for the role. Focus on relevant skills like reliability, time management, and customer service. Even if you don’t have direct delivery experience, emphasise transferable skills such as working in fast-paced environments, staying organised, and handling physical tasks. Keep your answer confident and to the point.

Example answer:

“You should hire me because I’m a reliable, hardworking, and motivated worker who takes pride in getting the job done right. While I may not have direct delivery experience, I have strong time management skills, a great work ethic, and experience working in fast-paced environments. I’m comfortable driving, following routes, and handling packages safely. Plus, I enjoy working independently and making sure customers receive great service. I’m excited about this opportunity and feel that I’d be a valuable addition to your team.”

10. Do you have any questions for us?

Asking questions at the end of a job interview helps to demonstrate your genuine interest in the role and company. Remember that an interview is also your opportunity to find out more about the role and whether you feel it’s a good fit.

Example questions:

  • What are the next steps in the hiring process?
  • What is the company culture like?
