Summer tips for delivery drivers 2025

As much as we all love the Summer sunshine almost 70% of drivers in our recent survey told us, heat is a big concern at this time of year.

Summer brings more than just hot weather. It also means busy roads and fresh hazards. With school holidays in full swing, expect more pedestrians, cyclists, kids and animals. Not to mention the holiday traffic and roadworks.

To help you stay safe, comfortable and efficient during the warmer months, here are our top summer driving tips:

Plan ahead

Nobody wants to spend more time in the heat than they need to. So, start your day with a well-planned route to maximise fuel efficiency and avoid traffic hotspots. Before you hit the road, check:

It’s also smart to pack a hot-weather emergency kit. Think bottled water, sunglasses, sun cream, a windscreen sunshade, and maybe even a cap or handheld fan for quick pit stops.

Stay hydrated

In our survey almost 74% of drivers said keeping hydrated was important in hot weather. But don’t wait until you’re thirsty, dehydration can sneak up on you and affect your focus. Freeze a water bottle overnight to enjoy cold sips throughout the day, and pack hydrating snacks like fruit, cucumber sticks or cherry tomatoes.

Take breaks

Regular breaks help keep your energy and concentration levels up, especially in the heat. Step out, stretch, find some shade, and reset your mind.

Keep your cool

Although vehicle climate control was mentioned by just 7.8% of the drivers we surveyed, it can make all the difference on a hot day. If your van has air con, make sure it’s working properly before the summer really kicks in. No air con? Keep your windows open and vents directed at you to stay cool. A clean cabin and breathable seat covers can also help. And don’t forget to dress for the heat – shorts and a t-shirt are usually an option for workwear.

Prepare for the glare

Bright sun can be blinding, especially in early mornings and late evenings. Keep a good pair of sunglasses handy and always use your sun visor. Starting out with a clean windscreen is also essential because dirt, squashed insects and streaks can turn a little glare into a major hazard.

Park smart

If possible, park in shaded areas to keep your cab cooler. And never leave pets or children in a parked vehicle, even for a few minutes.

Avoid breakdowns

More traffic, more roadworks and more heat all create more chances for things to go wrong. Stay ahead by:

Checking for planned roadworks on your route

Keeping your breakdown cover up to date

Booking regular maintenance checks over summer

Summer driving doesn’t have to be stressful. Particularly if you take the time to do a bit of prep and set off with the right mindset.

Stay alert, stay cool and enjoy the open road.
